Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit for Maryland State Employees

The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) encourages you to apply for the Student
Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit, a benefit that helps state employees reduce their student loan debt.
The application period is now open for the 2025 tax year.

APPLICATION PERIOD
  • Opens: July 1, 2025
  • Closes: September 15, 2025
Completing the brief application could result in a significant tax credit, helping you paying down
your existing student loan balances. Many Maryland state employees have received the credit,
and many have received the maximum credit of $5,000.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a Maryland resident for the 2025 tax year.
  • Must file Maryland state income taxes for the 2025 tax year.
  • Must have incurred at least $20,000 in undergraduate and/or graduate student loan debt.
  • Must have a minimum of $5,000 in outstanding student loan debt at the time of application.
  • Recipients of the tax credit must demonstrate that the entire amount awarded was directly applied to eligible student loan payments.
